There is an addRoleParents, which works great, but there is no way to remove a role parent once you've added it.

yeah, I have the same problem. it would be better to add removeRoleParents and getChildRoles

Added removeRoleParents() in pull request #130, which has since been merged to master so I guess this issue should be closed, unless someone wants to convert it to 'adding support for getChildRoles()'.
