Accessing the class/department information of a particular course

Course table maps faculty, subject and students(through curriculums) together, with a schema of

faculty_id: FOREIGN
subject_id: FOREIGN
curriculums: MANY
semester: INTEGER
active: BOOL

• Subject has a department
• Faculty has a department(Same as subject)
• Each student(through curriculum) has a department(May not be the same as subject)

Problems

• For common courses like Life Skills, a single faculty from that department could teach all the other departments, to separate these courses, we'd have to access the department via curriculum->student->department(Very messy)
• Following up on that, for attendance updation, it has to be verified that there are no 2 courses must have the same class at the same time for non-electives. But it is very difficult to verify if they're the same class with the present schema.

My proposal

• Class(Department x Semester x Degree, eg: S4 Btech CSE), can be linked with Course for non elective courses
• For electives, either access by subject->department, or add a field department(Redundant?) to Course, as they may not have a common Class(Minor).
• As an additional benefit, electives and non-electives can be separated.
