end user systems that use systemd, that are managed by systemd
systemd user level service file may be installed to the system (via make install), but it is merely put on to the disk
it remains an individual matter up to the user / distro to optionally decide:
whether or not to actually end up using the provided systemd user level service file as the desired mechanism for running and managing skippy --start-daemon as a background service
pros:
it's become the de-facto method these days on linux for service management and service discovery
it enables a phasing out deprecation of prior skippy-xd-runner thus avoiding confusion for 2 similar looking commands
it makes a single place here (as upstream) to provide common version of this file, that is to avoid individual user making their own differing versions
it eases or facilitates (makes less work) to distro maintainers (for the task of packaging), that they prefer such a simple file to be kept upstream. (and also commonly shared between all such distros)
cons:
lead developer @felixfung has objected that automatically restarting the daemon will lead to fewer (but valuable) user bug reports of skippy crashing
i have explained to felix that usage of this file is entirely optional. but further: it's only to be installed onto those systems which actually have systemd
poll will remain open until... not determined! either:
until it's clear or apparent outcome heavily one way or the other
until it's clear there is no adequate consensus
until approximately 6 months (from now). i.e. the calendar year 2024
until it's clear that nobody really cares... (aside from the developers)
this is 1st attempt at using github polls feature. so there may be lack of visibility and/or awareness (which is understandable). however if anybody cares to participate here. then it will encourage future polling for other matters and other aspects of skippy project.
developers are also users - so each gets 1 vote.
should skippy-xd include a systemd user-level service file?
