This project demonstrates preloading materials in SceneKit using a separate SCNRenderer. This renderer's OpenGL context shares resources with the SCNView's context. This came out of a discussion on the Apple Developer Forums (login required).
This also demonstrates using a custom pixel format such that multi-GPU systems aren't forced to switch (e.g. recent MacBook Pros with both an integrated and discrete graphics card).
