Crashes when run from start-up of remote session

When an Xfce session is started logging in remotely via Xrdp or VNC, it crashes with no error message except a box with this:

After that, no service that requires authentication works (not surprising as the agent appears not to be running). I can find no obvious logs to give a clue of what might be happening or how it might be fixed.
