(nyyr) When starting to take over ArcHUD2 and continuing it as ArcHUD3, I asked
Nenie about ArcHUD's history. This is what he answered:
(Nenie) I know everything about the history of ArcHUD since I was the sole
developer behind it. In it's very beginning it was based on a pre-alpha version
of NurfedHud which used the amazing animation-code of Antiarc named StatRings.
Later on NurfedHud decided to scrap it and move on with a simpler design
without StatRings and that's when I started coding ArcHUD. At first I simply
made changes to the old NurfedHud but later decided to make an addon of my own.
It was my first ever Lua project and ArcHUD has been my way of learning to
master Lua. It has since been through a few rewrites and ports. The first
version didn't use Ace I think mostly because I was still pretty new with the
whole Lua thing and this Ace-thing was way above my head back then. The name
ArcHUD was a two-part naming thing where Arc was of course a reference to it
having arcs but also because Arc was the acronym for the guild I was part of
back then called Ashen Rose Conspiracy.
Somewhere along the line StatRings became an addon of its own with player-,
target- and party-frames. About then ArcHUD had already gained a bit of
popularity and feature after feature was implemented. The configuration changed
from simple command-line to a graphical configuration window to a Dewdrop-menu.
The code of course grew more robust and modular as I started to learn Lua
better and have a better understanding on coding structure.
And then finally the last version of ArcHUD2 was released from me. I had by
then changed to another unit frame-addon and no longer used ArcHUD2 and hence
no longer maintained the addon. A few coders from the Wowace community has made
some compatibility and bug fixes over the years but that's about it. Until you
came along of course. And now it's alive and well again.
That's the story behind ArcHUD.
(nyyr) As for me, ArcHUD was also the reason to start coding in Lua. I got into
Ace3 and came along with it, so that any other dependencies were removed and
replaced by Ace3 libraries. One obvious result is the powerful configuration
interface it has now. I added a lot of extra features, the most prominent one
being the custom buff rings. For a long time, I did not touch the StatRings
code since it looked complex. But with ArcHUD3 2.0, I fully understood it and
added additional rendering features such as the ability to show arbitrary parts
of the half rings.
