Directed by Tami LoSasso |
When Edward Bloom becomes ill, his son, William, travels to be with him. William has a strained relationship with Edward because his father has always told exaggerated stories about his life, and William thinks he's never really told the truth. Even on his deathbed, Edward recounts fantastical anecdotes. When William, who is a journalist, starts to investigate his father's tales, he begins to understand the man and his penchant for storytelling.

Will Bloom: age 30s. More reserved. A journalist whose search for truth drives him to resent his father’s big ideas and tall tales. He’s married to Josephine, a woman who urges him to explore his father’s good nature. He’s closer to his mother. Tenor |
Sandra Templeton Bloom: age ranges from 17 to 50s. A lovely southern girl who marries Edward not just because she is instantly taken with him, but because the adventure of being with a man like Edward is better than anything she could have envisioned. She is kind, patient, playful, and loves Edward more than anything else in the world. Mezzo |
Josephine Bloom: late 20s early 30s. A photographer and journalist. Wife of Will. French and romantic. She is pregnant with her first child. She is more entertained and intrigued by Edward then Will is and that frustrates him. She tries to make Will understand his father by accepting that he just doesn’t understand him. Any vocal range. |
Young Will: The child version of Will. About 8 years old, Will is too smart for his own good, skeptical, and on one hand he likes his father’s stories and on the other he just can’t believe them. This role is cast. |
Karl: age undetermined. Karl is a giant living in a cave outside of Ashton. He is grumpy and misunderstood. He doesn’t like being a giant until Edward convinces him he isn’t too big for Ashton, Ashton is too small for him, and they set off on a journey that ignites Karl’s destiny. Bari-Bass |
Amos: age undetermined. Amos is the ringleader and owner of the traveling circus. He is a show off, and a manipulator. He’s cheap and will take advantage of people for his gain. He’s also a werewolf. Edward shows him it’s ok to be himself, and when he accepts his shapeshifting he finds eventual happiness with himself. Amos can be cast as a girl. Tenor |
Jenny Hill: age 18 - 60s. Jenny is Edward’s high school sweetheart. They think they’re going to be in love forever, and when Edward leaves Ashton with Karl, he promises to come back to her. But he never does. She remains in love with him into old age. She starts out sweet and trusting and turns out sad and lonely. Any vocal range. |
The Witch: age undetermined. The Witch is the Oracle in the show. She holds the secrets to Edward’s life and death. She is symbolic of the journey of life and serves as something Edward is both afraid of but also drawn to. Mezzo belter. |
Don Price: age ranges from 13-40s. Don is Edward’s childhood friend and later enemy. He’s jealous of all the good fortune that comes Edward’s way, and really mad when Edward steals his fiancee away. He becomes the town mayor and challenges Edward when he suggests they move the town of Ashton away from an impending flood. Any vocal range. |
Zacky Price: age ranges from 12-40s. Zacky is Don’s little brother. He’s squirrely and will do anything his big brother does. He idolizes Don, until later in the show when he believes in Edward to save the town. He has a youthful energy about him all the time. This role can be cast as a girl. Any vocal range. |
Dr. Bennett: age ranges from 50s-70s. Dr. Bennett is Edward’s trusted doctor and an old family friend. He carries a maturity about him, and is the bearer of bad news. He is gentle but firm, and acts as Edward’s judge in Showdown. Any vocal range. |
Will and Josephine’s Son: age range 7-9. The son appears as a cub scout at the beginning of the first act when Edward is bragging about his war stories and again in the final scene when Will reprises “Be the Hero.” He is sweet, fun, and totally taken with the stories of both Edward and Will.
