Charging Cycle Loop Issue on MacBook Pro M3 Pro

System Information

  • MacBook Pro M3 Pro
  • macOS 15.2
  • BatFi version 2.2.0

Issue Description

When setting any charging limit (tested with both 60% and 80%), the following behaviour occurs:

  1. The battery charges until it reaches the set limit
  2. At the limit, charging stops (power from the AC adapter is disconnected)
  3. Shortly after, charging begins again
  4. Charging stops again
  5. This cycle repeats indefinitely

Behavior Details

  • This issue occurs regardless of the charging limit set
  • The cycling behaviour happens automatically without any user intervention
  • The problem appears to start randomly during normal usage
  • The behaviour persists even after the application is restarted or the charging limit is changed

Expected Behavior

  • The battery should charge up to the set limit
  • Once the limit is reached, charging should stop
  • Charging should only resume when the battery level falls below the set threshold

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install BatFi 2.2.0
  2. Set any charging limit (e.g., 80%)
  3. Connect the MacBook to power
  4. Wait for the battery to reach the set limit
  5. Observe the charging behaviour

Additional Notes

  • This behaviour is consistent across different charging limits
  • The issue impacts normal usage as the constant connect/disconnect cycle may be detrimental to battery health

On further inspection, it seems to be because of this setting: Discharge battery when charged over limit. This setting is causing the mac to discharge, and at the same time, it is causing the mac to stop charging. This happened right after the mac was in sleep, and charged to 2% over the limit.
