Capture stories

• Badges for folk who've contributed their story (like the RSE Catalyst ones)
• Need GDPR / permission form for those we interview
  • Part of online form for self-submitted
  • Separate paper one for recorded interview

Unconference session

• Wed 6th morning session (see issue Potential RSECon23 shared unconference session #3)
• Member stories workshop “doing session”
• Could offer both people writing their own or being interviewed by us
• Wider conversation of shape of RSE roles (especially non-traditional)
• Self-crafted ribbons for shape for RSE role
• Link to RSE roles plenary the next day

Web form on Society website

• Online form for self-written ones (folk can then write and upload their own at any time)
• Use similar form to job posts Due to time constraints we're using a Google form for now. @martintoreilly Will add a link to it from the Society website once we've finalised it.
• Launch at start of conference

Stall / roving mics in breaks

• Potentially grab a spare sponsor stall to be in a fixed place at breaks? Or use Society stall?
• Have ribbons or similar to identify folk who can be approached to record a story
• @martintoreilly to bring two roving mics

RSE Stories questions

• Can you describe your background and your current role?
• How did you become an RSE?
• When did you first hear the term “RSE”?
• What is your favourite thing about your work and being an RSE?
• And what is the least favourite?
• What’s the most unexpected part about being a RSE?
• Did you already have any interactions with the RSE Society and the RSE community? If yes, which? (e.g. member of the Society, attend events, RSE conference, active in RSE Slack, …?)
• Do you see yourself as an academic, researcher, software engineer, technician…? All of it? Something else? A mix of one or two terms?
• What do you see as your most likely future career path from here? And what would be your ideal career path?
• In your view, how could RSEs be better supported in their work? What do you need? What is missing?
• What advice do you have to individuals looking to start a career in Research Software Engineering?
• Which question did we not ask you which we should have (and what is the answer)?

I've currently tagged it as deliverable in any of the 4 session slots, with myself and @JamieJQuinn as facilitators for the morning sessions and myself and @sjmf down as facilitators for the afternoon sessions. If people think we should reduce this, please comment here.

I've currently tagged all slots as in-person only, but we could potentially offer some slots as remote-only, either pre-emptively or if there is interest from remote participants? We're not supporting hybrid unconference sessions this time round.

I've created a Google form to allow people to self-submit their RSE Stories. I've currently made all the questions required except the last two. Thoughts on whether we should make more questions optional (or make either of the last two required)?

I will bring two wireless microphones and the kit to record to my laptop for the RSE Stories stall. We should work out a schedule for who will staff the stall and interview people.

@JamieJQuinn had a great time taking the interviews. Needs to try out a couple of AI transcription tools and may ask for some help. Otter suggested, Jamie has a couple of leads from Colin Sauze. Will need some help tidying up the transcription once its there and then liasing with the interviewee to make sure they're happy
