Stop visualizer when app goes into background but keep microphone active

I have been trying to resolve this for a while but haven't been able to find a working solution.

Is there a simple way to stop only the visualizer when the app goes into the background but keep the microphone active? I am using the EZMicrophone class in my app. I have AVAudioRecorder implemented outside of EZAudio but use the EZMicrophone class for the visualizer.
