Development cofinanced by the Life+ Programme - SMILE project LIFE12 ENV/IT/000289 (www.life-smile.eu)
SMILE – Strategies for Marine Litter and Environmental prevention of sea pollution in coastal areas – is a European project financed by the European Commission aiming to decrease marine litter in coastal areas.
The presence of marine litter in coastal and marine areas is an environmental problem, first of all. Marine litter represents a serious danger for the ecosystems’ equilibrium and for wildlife. Furthermore, several important sides of our lives – such as health, life quality, local economy – depend on the status of the environment we live in.
In order to face the problem, SMILE will focus on different levels:
- finding efficient solution of waste recovery and recycle;
- building common strategies for local waste management;
- raising citizens and tourists’ awareness to encourage sustainable behaviours;
The project involves 4 Municipalities in Liguria Region: Pietra Ligure, Magliolo, Giustenice e Tovo San Giacomo along the Maremola river basin.
