… chameleon in every spare minute, which is how we discovered that some reads might have problems with the long write times to the external flash and thus thought about how to solve this issue.

This is, why we are currently working on a new memory concept that involves a new hardware revision of the chameleon.
More Details about the new hardware revision is scheduled to be available soon.

With this tag, we wanted to make this current firmware easily available to anyone who still wants to use it, but note that we plan to discontinue this firmware with the release of the new firmware.
We chose to make a "better" firmware version available to all of you, that solves the problem with long write delays to the external flash by using the internal SRAM of the MCU.
However, you should note that this limits the size of the currently emulated card to 1KB, which is also why we wanted you to be still able to access the old firmware that directly writes to the flash by this tag.
