IDE binding features

The purpose of this page is to describe in details the kind of content assistance that is expected from an IDE. It is primarily targeted to IDE developers though anyone interested in understanding these features will find valuable resources in this document.

At the time of writing, Eclips] 3.6.3+ (via STS), Intellij IDEA Ultimate Edition 14.1+ and NetBeans have all support for Spring Boot configuration.

There are other Spring Boot-related features that we could consider. This document focus on configuration assistance only.

Canonical key representation

Spring Boot uses the lower-case hyphen format to represent a key (i.e. acme.foo.my-super-property) but as described in Spring Boot Configuration Binding a set of other formats are supported as well.

Ideally, the IDE should allow the user to define his or her canonical format and auto-complete values accordingly. While in theory there is nothing wrong mixing different formats within the same file or the same project, some combinations may be troublesome, especially with the YAML format.

Keys auto-completion

The IDE could provide some sort of auto-completion based on the context that would list the keys that are valid. IDEs are currently supporting this so we won’t cover it any further. It is important however to cover corner cases.

Simple POJO

If we take our Bar example above, the relevant meta-data will be generated for it as long as it’s detected as nested property. But such pojo can be used in more complex scenario such as collections (List<Bar> bars) or maps (Map<String,Bar> bars).

It would be nice if the IDE could still support some assistance once the first portion of the key has been built (prefix.bars[0]. or prefix.bars.myKey. respectively). The binding rules that we use for such object are exactly the same as the ones that we use to build the meta-data.

It’s obviously much more challenging since any property can be a single value or nested. The IDE would have to discover those objects at runtime. Immutable objects can be safely considered as single value. Similarly, if the current object exposes one or more properties (as defined by the binding rules above), it can be considered nested.

Enum

Enums are often used as a way to propose a list of value for a configuration option. When an enum is the target of the value or the type of a Map property, the IDE should inspect it and propose an auto-completion of values based on its definition.

Let’s consider the following `Enum `

public enum GenderMALE, FEMALE, UNKNOWN
}

and some POJO that uses that Gender

}

Let’s assume now that you write foo.statuses.. Auto-completion should show up and display in theory a list with MALE, FEMALE, UNKNOWN.

Tip
Enums are to be considered a special case here as well since Spring Boot binds them regardless of the case. To comply with the chosen format, auto-completed enum values may be represented in a different format (e.g. lower-case)
Note
As for any type of runtime discovery, the actual class of the Enum may not be available in the current project. In that case, the property should be considered as a simple String value with no further content assistance.

Special types

There are also some special types that may trigger some smart auto-completion:

  • java.nio.charset.Charset: auto-completion of charset values

  • java.util.Locale: auto-completion of locales

  • org.springframework.util.MimeType: auto-completion of content type values

  • org.springframework.core.io.Resource: auto-completion of Spring’s Resource abstraction (see org.springframework.boot.cli.util.ResourceUtils for the general structure of the String value that it parses)

Note
These special auto-completion should not try to validate anything (i.e. if the user types a mime-type that is not in that list, it shouldn’t be considered as an error or a warning).

Documentation

There are various cases where the meta-data does not contain any documentation. Either because the Javadoc is not available when the meta-data is generated or for cases where we navigate the hierarchy at runtime (see the Simple POJO and Enum use cases above).

However, the sources of those classes may be available in the IDE so it would be very nice if it could alleviate that limitation by retrieving the documentation at runtime for the keys that don’t have one.

For consistency, the IDE should look for field Javadoc (if the field exists), then getter Javadoc and finally setter Javadoc. This gives a chance to any 3rd party to write the key description with the same logic as regular @ConfigurationProperties annotated POJO. Enums are usually documented and are also affected by this requirement.

Hints

Spring Boot 1.3 introduces the concept of hints in the meta-data. Hints are meant to help an IDE to discover the values applicable to an element (i.e. property, map key, map value, collection value, etc).

Potential values can be provided with an optional description. That information should be used to build an auto-complete list for the related element.

A hint provider may also be specified. The purpose of the provider is to define the semantics behind the value so that the tools can offer dedicated content assistance for it. Spring Boot defines a set of providers that the IDE could implement.

Several providers may be specified but only one is active at a time. The IDE must try them in the order in which they are defined in the meta-data and apply the first one they support. If none are supported, no special content assistance should be provider either.

Wrapping Up

These are the additional features that an IDE may implement to further improve the code assistance for Spring Boot apps:

  • Propose a set of formats and allow the user to chose which one to use for the project. All keys should be auto-completed according to that format

  • Harvest Simple POJO used in configuration keys to discover their properties at runtime. Offer auto-completion for them

  • Harvest documentation at runtime if the description field in the meta-data is empty and if the source code of the related class is available.

  • Harvest enum documentation

  • Harvest Simple POJO properties documentation

  • Support hint values and hint providers

  • Provides smart auto-completion for known types and enums
